Zoloft And Pregnancy
One issue that is receiving a lot of attention lately is Zoloft and pregnancy. This is a tricky issue that no one really has a definitive answer about how safe it actually is, but it all boils down to being more of a personal choice than anything.
Taking Zoloft While Pregnant
Zoloft (Sertraline) is a type of antidepressant that is used to treat depression. When a woman is on this type of antidepressant she will be faced with a very difficult choice when she finds out she is expecting and must carefully weigh the pros and cons of continuing on the medication.
Due to fluctuating hormones when a woman is pregnant, it is difficult for women who are already clinically depressed, to cope with the condition. An expectant mother, who is not treating her depression properly, can put both herself and her baby at risk. This can lead to miscarriages, premature births and postpartum depression. This is why it is extremely important for the depression to still be treated during the pregnancy.
It is because of this very scenario that so many pregnant women who are on Zoloft continue to stay on the medication throughout their pregnancy. This choice is made easier by the fact that many experts consider the risks to the unborn baby to be quite low while taking antidepressants, but this does not mean that birth defects won’t occur because of these drugs.
The bottom line is that while there are certain antidepressants such as Paxil that pregnant women are strongly recommended to avoid, Zoloft can still be considered an option.
Speak with your doctor about the associated risk before making your final decision and take comfort in knowing that thousands of women on antidepressants end up having happy and healthy babies.
