Whole Milk For Babies
Can you tell me if whole milk for babies is necessary or can I use skim milk instead?
No, using skim or 2% milk will not offer the nutritional value your baby needs to grow. You will want to give your baby whole cow’s milk as it contains the essential fat needed for a growing baby.
Also, please keep in mind that you will not want to offer cow’s milk to your baby until he or she is at least 12 months of age.
Whenever your baby turns two years of age, you may be able to then offer the lower fat alternative, but consult with your baby’s pediatrician first.
How To Make The Switch To Whole Milk
The taste of cow’s milk is different than both breastmilk and formula, which is why it is recommended that you offer your baby a mix at first.
As an example, you can offer your baby a cup with a mixture of 2 ounces breastmilk and 2 ounces whole cow’s milk. Then gradually add more cow’s milk each time until the transition is made.
How Much Whole Milk Can My Baby Have?
It is recommended that you offer your baby between 16-24 ounces of whole milk daily.
You want your baby on a balanced diet, which includes eating solids that contain essential vitamins and minerals necessary for his growth. If your baby is consuming too much milk, he may refuse to eat the solids you offer him
The transition to cow’s milk may take time with certain babies, but eventually most of them make the switch within a few weeks.
