I am a first time mother and was hoping you could tell me, when do babies roll over? I am starting to worry about my baby because I think she should be able to do this important milestone by now.

It is essential that you understand babies reach milestones on their own time schedule and rushing them to ease your own worries will just upset your baby and stress you out as well. As an example, some babies can walk as early as 11 months, but others may not be able to walk until they are well over a year old. If your baby is a “late bloomer” or even an early one, this doesn’t necessarily mean he will be a slow adult or an exceptional one as well. While milestones are important, it is important to remember that you should let your baby progress at his own pace.

At What Age Do Babies Roll Over?

Some babies can roll over as early as 3 months, while others may not be able to reach this milestone until 5 months. Keep in mind that this is usually first done while your baby is on her tummy and rolls over onto her back. However, she will need to be much stronger to flip from her back onto her tummy.

This is why tummy time is important for your young baby, as it helps him develop his neck, back and arm muscles that will eventually help him roll over in both directions by 6-7 months. By this time your baby will also be developing these muscles to allow him to sit up independently and reach for items. Around 7 months, your baby will most likely be able to roll over from his tummy into a sitting position.

This of course will eventually lead to crawling as your baby is encouraged to reach and move for objects that are just out of his reach.

When To Worry

While it was mentioned earlier that you need to be patient with baby milestones, it is important to note that in some cases there are underlying problems that need to be addressed by a doctor. If you notice by months 6 or 7 that your baby still isn’t trying to roll over or sit up, be sure to bring it to the attention of your pediatrician.
