I just found out I’m pregnant. I would like to know what to do when you find out you are pregnant.

This will easily be one of the most exciting moments of your life, assuming that the pregnancy was planned! Since many of the home pregnancy tests today are so highly accurate, the chances of a false positive are usually pretty low. After a positive pregnancy test, the absolute most important thing for you to do is to adopt a healthy lifestyle to help ensure your baby’s well-being. This of course means not only eating well and exercising, but immediately ceasing the use of recreational drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.

Smoking, drinking and using drugs during pregnancy has been attributed to birth defects, low birth weight, premature births and miscarriages. So it is pretty obvious that you will need to stop these unhealthy habits immediately after finding out you are pregnant. With that said, here is a list of other things you will have to do:

  • Start taking prenatal vitamins – in many cases you will probably have already been taking these vitamins well before you got pregnant, but if you have not started taking them, start doing so as soon as possible.
  • Make an appointment with a doctor – you will want to schedule an appointment with your doctor to not only confirm that you are in fact pregnant, but to also start planning your prenatal visits.
  • Decide if you want a midwife or not. Take a little time to educate yourself about the benefits of a midwife and what they can do for you and your baby.
  • Start reading – take the time to start doing research online about pregnancy and buy yourself some good books on the subject. You want to do as much reading about your pregnancy as possible throughout the next nine months.
  • Deciding when to tell people – it is entirely up to you when you tell people about your pregnancy. However, most people prefer to wait until well into the second trimester and the threat of miscarriage has passed before telling others. In many cases, the expectant parents choose to tell those close to them right away about the pregnancy.
  • Take into consideration your housing – if you are currently living in a one-bedroom apartment or small home, you may want to consider finding different accommodations to suit your growing family.
  • Sign up for pregnancy classes – there are a plethora of classes and workshops that are available in most areas that will help to prepare you for your pregnancy and well beyond.

Finally, don’t forget to celebrate the moment. This is one of those memories that you want to hang onto forever and take the time to savor.
