Is it normal to have vaginal pain during pregnancy? The pain seems to come and go and it is a sharp jabbing feeling. I have been experiencing these sharp pains for the last week and I am getting a little concerned.

Yes, it is perfectly normal to have these types of pains during pregnancy and it is perfectly understandable that this has you worried.

You can take comfort in knowing that many pregnant women have also experienced the same symptoms that you are and there is actually very sound reasoning behind why you are most likely having these pains.

There are a couple of possibilities for why you are having this pain, and since you forgot to mention how far along you are in your pregnancy, the best we can do is speculate.

One possible explanation is that you are in the middle of your pregnancy and your uterus is still expanding to accommodate your growing baby. Since the ligaments that attach the uterus to your pelvis need to stretch to make more room for your baby, this could explain why you are feeling a sharp and jabbing pain.

Another reason could be that you are getting closer to your due date. Your cervix will typically start to dilate around this time, as it prepares for the birth of your baby. As your cervix starts to slowly open, this will typically cause you to have a sharp or piercing pain in your vaginal area. You may experience these pains up to a few weeks before your due date actually arrives.

If you are extremely concerned about these pains you should not feel embarrassed about contacting your doctor or midwife to give you an examination. Remember, they are there to help you and never be afraid to go to them whenever you feel there might be a problem. As the old saying goes, it is better to be safe than sorry!
