I am taking my baby to the beach this summer for the first time; can you tell me what sunscreen for babies you would recommend?

First things first – if your baby is under 6 months of age, I highly suggest keeping him or her out of the sun altogether. This is because their skin is very sensitive and babies this age should not be exposed to the sun for more than a few minutes at a time, if at all.

Best Sunscreen For Babies

If your baby is in fact older than 6 months, you will want to look for brands that are as chemical free as possible so that it doesn’t react with your baby’s sensitive and supple skin.

You can search on various brands to see which sunscreen brands have the safest ingredients for your baby’s delicate skin by searching at the Skin Deep database here.

You will want to search for sunscreens that contain either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which are not only better for your baby’s skin, but will block the sun immediately after it is put on. Sunscreens containing either of these ingredients will also protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

You will also want to look for a sunscreen that has a SPF of at least 30 or above.

How To Apply Sunscreen To Babies

The key here is to layer it on thickly and don’t forget to cover sensitive areas like the nose, back of the ears, neckline and feet as well. Also don’t forget to buy a nice sized sun hat for your baby as well, as an added layer of protection.

You simply can’t do enough to protect her from the sun’s harmful rays.

Brands I Recommend

Blue Lizard Baby and California Baby are brands that I recommend using on babies over the age of 6 months.
