If you are experiencing sharp pains during pregnancy, it is most likely perfectly normal and not reason for concern. There are of course situations in which you will need to contact your doctor or midwife immediately for further evaluation, but it is quite common to have various pains while you are pregnant.

Sharp Abdominal Pain During Pregnancy

Many expectant mothers usually go into a panic whenever they feel any type of sharp pain in their abdomen. This is because of the great fear of having a miscarriage, but many times there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for why you are feeling these pains.

One of the most common pains that a woman will feel in her lower abdomen when she is pregnant, is known as a Braxton Hicks contraction. These contractions actually begin early in your pregnancy and you may become more aware of them as your pregnancy goes along. Typically these contractions lead many pregnant women to falsely believe that they are going into labor as their due date grows near. Because of this the Braxton Hicks contractions have been labeled as “false contractions”.

These types of contractions will feel like a sharp cramp in your lower abdomen and will typically go away whenever you get up and move around. They also will not get more intense or severe as time goes along.

Round Ligament Pain

This is another type of sharp pain that an expectant mother may feel, and it generally will start in the groin area and move into your hips. This pain is caused by the ligaments that are holding your uterus in place. As the uterus expands these ligaments get stretched out much like a rubber band, and sudden movements can cause them to go into a spasm.

You typically will feel this type of pain after a sudden movement such as rolling over, getting out of bed quickly, or after exercising.

Gas Pains During Pregnancy

Pregnant women are much more susceptible to bloating and gassiness because their digestive systems are much slower than usual. This leads to an increase in gas, which has to be expelled through burping or flatulence.

Since some pregnant women are more prone to being gassy than others, they can get severely bloated which will cause sharp pains and great discomfort.

These are just a few of the conditions that can cause pain for women whenever they are pregnant. There are a whole plethora of other reasons that may cause pain throughout your pregnancy, which are beyond the scope of this article. As always, if you feel that the pain you are feeling is unusual and it has you concerned, never hesitate to contact your doctor or midwife so that they may diagnose if there is a problem or not.
