Pregnancy gas can cause a lot of stress and discomfort for many expectant mothers. However, there are some measures you can take to help prevent this from happening and becoming over-bloated throughout your pregnancy.

Indigestion During Pregnancy

The reason that so many women become gassy when they are pregnant is because their digestive systems have slowed down. This is because a pregnant woman’s body will start to produce an overabundance of progesterone, which helps to relax the muscles in the digestive tract, making it much slower than normal.

What Causes All Of This Bloating?

There are two main culprits which can cause you to become bloated. The first is swallowing too much air, and it must be expelled, which is generally done by burping. The second is whenever your large intestines have to use bacteria to break down food, which can cause an excessive buildup of gas. This of course must be expelled through flatulence.

How Can I Prevent Bloating?

It is simply the makeup of your body and very little can be done about it. However, you can take certain measures to help control this gas and eventual bloating.

The most important thing is to change your diet and avoid foods that make you gassy. This can vary from woman to woman, which is why you will want to keep close tabs on the types of food that you are eating and how your body reacts to them. You will want to pay particular attention to those foods that make you particularly gassy and avoid them.

You also want to avoid swallowing air, as this can cause a buildup of gas. This can be done by not drinking your beverages with a straw, having smaller meals, and most importantly eating slowly.

Finally, you will want to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. One of the most important ways of keeping your digestive system healthy it is through exercise. Even 15 minutes a day of activity can make a dramatic difference to your digestive system.

If you are having severe bloating and have taken the measures above, yet are still having trouble with gas, you should then contact your doctor about which medications he recommends. Never take any types of medication until speaking with your doctor first, as there are a number of over-the-counter medications that can be harmful to your baby.
