Newborn Growth Spurts
One of the biggest tests when you have a baby is newborn growth spurts. Having a baby can be the most exhilarating experience of your life, but this will also test you in many ways you never imagined possible. This is because many babies can become quite fussy at this time and many inexperienced parents who are unaware of the situation at first, panic.
Most babies that are having a growth spurt will have an insatiable desire to eat and may want to feed every hour, and still continue to cry when they are finished. This of course isn’t true in all cases, but can be a typical situation with many of these babies; Hence the reason that so many parents worry there is an underlying problem.
However, once you learn about when these growth spurts are to occur, you can prepare yourself for them, and not worry needlessly.
When Do Babies Have Growth Spurts
Your baby has a lot of growing to do in her first year, but naturally it can’t all happen at once (that would be quite disturbing). Instead, these growth periods happen several times through out the first 12 months of her life.
As with milestones, growth spurts in babies can vary, but typically they happen at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months and 9 months. These episodes last a few days and you will definitely start to notice that your baby is no longer fitting into her clothes anymore. This is one reason you should carefully select the clothing sizes you buy, especially with newborn clothes.
Signs A Baby Is Having A Growth Spurt
If your baby is on a routine sleeping schedule, you will find she is waking more frequently at night, crying often, and is eating much more than usual. This is essentially because your baby is hungry and needs to eat more often to accommodate her growing body.
This can be a frustrating time for you, but hang in there and trust that the growth spurt will end shortly and things will return back to normal (whatever your normal is!).
