I have decided to stop breast-feeding and would like to know how to dry up breast milk. Can you tell me what the most effective ways to accomplish this are?

At one point or another all new mothers have to go through this process and many agonize over the guilt they feel about no longer breast-feeding their babies, while others fear that this will be a painful process that takes forever. However, this is a personal decision that only you can make and not everyone experiences excruciating pain with this process.

Drying Up Breast Milk

After you have made the decision that you want to stop breast-feeding permanently, you will have to slowly start weaning your baby from the breast. This is important for a couple of reasons, the first being that you do not want to suddenly stop feeding your baby breast milk altogether, as this can be quite a dramatic and unwelcome change for him or her. You do not want to upset any routines your baby has in an abrupt manner, as these are comfort measures that your infant has come to rely on. Secondly, it can be quite painful to stop breast-feeding cold turkey and it can also lead to breast infections as well.

You will want to start the process by simply substituting a bottle feeding once or twice daily, over the course of a few weeks, until you get to the point that you are only using formula.

If you are also still pumping milk, you do not want to abruptly end these sessions as well. Depending upon how much you are pumping, you will want to try and reduce the amount of times you are expressing as slowly as possible over the course of a few weeks, but try to eliminate at least several sessions a week.

How To Dry Up Breast Milk Fast

There is really no safe or effective way to dry up your breast milk quickly, as you just have to let nature take its course. Some women will resort to binding their breast to try and dry up their milk and this can be extremely dangerous. Not only is this bad for your baby, but it is something you want to avoid altogether as binding can lead to a number of complications with your breasts.

In most cases the process of drying up your milk can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months and can really vary from woman to woman.

Is There A Way To Relieve The Pain Of Drying Up Breast Milk?

You can try using such things as cold compresses in short intervals on your breasts or you can try and help relieve the pain by taking medication. However, please consult with your doctor first before taking any types of medication, as some medications can be passed through to the breast milk and be harmful for your baby.
