How long after ovulation does implantation occur? Also, is using the average menstrual cycle a good way to gauge when you will be ovulating?

Typically implantation of a fertilized egg will occur between 7 to 12 days after ovulation.

When you are trying to get pregnant, one of the most important things you will need to learn about your body is when it is ovulating. This window of opportunity occurs each month whenever your body releases an egg to be fertilized. The egg is sent down the fallopian tube to be fertilized by male sperm and it typically will live for an average of 24 hours. If the egg is not fertilized the uterine lining is shed. The shedding of an egg that has not been fertilized is of course known as the menstruation period

It is important to keep in mind that while most women have millions of immature eggs developing in their body, in most cases only one egg is released each month. This makes it extremely critical for women who wish to become pregnant, to understand how long their menstrual cycle is each month. This will help you to determine when ovulation is occurring in your body.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about a typical menstrual cycle lasting 28 days, and you may or may not fall into this average range. It is generally believed, albeit wrongly, that ovulation occurs 14 days after your menstrual cycle begins. However, many women have menstrual cycles that are shorter or longer than the average cycle. As an example, your menstrual cycle may be as long as 36 days, while your friend may have one as short as 24 days.

Without knowing how long your menstrual cycle actually is, it can be quite impossible to pinpoint the exact time of your ovulation each month. This is why you will want to chart your cycles for a few months before you plan on becoming pregnant.

If you try to use the average menstrual cycle, this can lead to a great deal of inaccuracy. If you go by a typical 28 day cycle and use an ovulation testing kit, this means you will be testing on day 12 for ovulation. However, if in reality your cycle is 34 days long, you should actually be testing for ovulation on day 18. This is because whenever you are using an ovulation kit, you have to start testing 16 days from the end of your cycle.

As you can clearly see from the example above, there can be a great discrepancy in the average menstrual cycle, versus your actual cycle. This is why it is so imperative that you get to know your body and your average menstrual cycle length, if you want to accurately determine when you are ovulating.
