Can I Get Pregnant After Ovulation?
Can I get pregnant after ovulation? I have read conflicting things and I am not sure if it is possible to get pregnant after I am done ovulating or not.
There is a lot of bad information out there and it is not surprising that you are confused, but we get this question quite often and you are not alone in wondering about this issue.
Many couples who are trying to conceive get confused with how ovulation actually works and this is why many women have trouble getting pregnant. However, a little education goes a long way towards helping you get pregnant and will greatly increase your chances of conceiving.
How Long After Ovulation Can You Get Pregnant?
Whenever a woman’s ovary releases an egg to be fertilized by the male sperm, it has a lifespan of about 24 hours. A woman will typically release only one egg to be fertilized each month, but in some cases two eggs are released within a 24-hour period, which can lead to the birth of fraternal twins.
Since the egg can only live for about a day, this means that it must be fertilized before it dies. However, this does not necessarily mean you have a one-day window to get pregnant each month. Believe it or not, sperm can live inside of a woman for up to five days. This is why most women are considered to be fertile for between 5 to 7 days each month.
Therefore, if you are trying to get pregnant, you will want to have intercourse several days before ovulation begins. Ideally, you want to have intercourse 24 to 48 hours before ovulation. However, sperm that is four or five days old can still fertilize an egg.
What Is The Best Way To Predict Ovulation Time?
There are a number of ways that you can predict when you are about to ovulate and this can include: spotting in the middle of your menstrual cycle, a change in your cervical mucus (milky white), experiencing cramping, and tracking your basal temperature. However, many women find that using an ovulation test kit is the most effective way.
To take one of these tests, you will have to keep track of your menstrual cycles, so you know exactly how long they last each month. Then you will want to take the ovulation test 16 days before the end of your cycle. So as an example, if your cycle lasts for 36 days, you will want to take a test on day 20.
If the test comes back positive, this means you will generally be ovulating within the next 24 to 72 hours.
