Blood in infant stool is very common and just about every parent will have this scare with their baby at one time or another.

In most cases it is nothing to be concerned with and occurs when there is a tear in the rectum, from a bad case of diaper rash or trying to pass large stool. Another example can include swallowing tiny amounts of blood from an unnoticed cut on the mother’s nipple while breastfeeding.

When Should I Worry About Blood In My Baby’s Diaper?

If the bleeding is persistent and your baby seems uncomfortable, you will want to have your physician examine him.

If you notice the stool is deep red and has a jelly like appearance, and your baby is having any kind of cramping or seems to be in discomfort, don’t hesitate to take him to the emergency room. It is always better to be safe than sorry in this instance.
