My husband and I are talking about the possibility of starting a family, but I keep asking myself “am I ready to have a baby”? I want to have a baby, but I am not sure if this is the right time or not.

This is a great question and one that countless other parents asked themselves as well before having their own children. This is because deciding when to have a baby is not something that can be taken lightly, as it is a great responsibility that you cannot walk away from. Once you have a baby, it is essentially a lifetime commitment. As most parents will tell you, once your child grows up and leaves your home, you will still worry about him or her until the day you die.

There are a number of questions that you must ask yourself before you decide to have a baby and it is extremely important that you are totally honest with your answers, or else you may be cheating both yourself and your unborn baby as well of a happy life.

The most important question that must be asked is; are you willing to sacrifice for your baby? Having a baby is going to take up a great deal of your time and your life is going to be forever altered. You will not be able to just pick up and go anytime you please, as things will need to be planned, babysitters will need to be found, diaper bags will need to be prepared, etc.

Simply going out for dinner can be quite the experience, and your entire meal may be ruined when your little bundle of joy keeps crying and you are forced to leave the restaurant out of respect for others.

This of course is just the little things. There will be the sleep deprivation and an unyielding amount of patience that you will need for your baby. Your baby is only worried about self-survival and he does not care if it is 3 AM or 3 PM, if your baby is hungry, he’s going to cry until tell you feed him. There will be days that you will have to go to work and you will barely be able to see straight because you were up all night with your screaming baby.

There will also be times that you can’t spend time with your friends or do fun and exciting new things, because you have a baby. There will be moments that you will surely question why you wanted to have a baby and you may feel trapped or frustrated. This is only natural and happens to a majority of parents in the beginning and beyond.

Another important question that you must ask yourself is if your financial house is in order. Having a baby can get expensive. Not only can baby products such as cribs, strollers, diapers and formula get expensive, but this is only going to be a drop in the bucket compared to how much you spend on your child over the course of his or her life. While you don’t need to be financially well off, you should be able to afford the basic costs of having a child.

In the end, I can tell you from personal experience that I felt I wasn’t ready to have a baby, but had my daughter anyway. I have to say that it was the best decision I ever made and I shiver to think about what my life would be like without her!
